Chiara (bus tour guide), Gianluca (driver), and Claudia (Pompeii guide) were all excellent! They made the day great with the way in which they presented all aspects of the tour and made things comfortable, especially with a group of 26 people. Definitely worth booking! The hike on Vesuvio was your own pace once you were dropped off (just had a set time, which was more than enough) and the tour in Pompeii was great as it touched on the highlights without being too overwhelming

Amazing! Saw so much history, and climbed the volcano. We even got to taste limoncello.

This trip was fantastic. The guide Melania went above and beyond for us. It was a terribly hot day so she rearranged our schedule to try and beat the temperatures. Also, I left my phone at Pompeii, she arranged for another guide to find it quickly and had it delivered to our drop off point. I was quite frantic as you can imagine but she was superb. The guide at Pompeii gennero Longobardi also gave a perfect tour. He was extremely knowledgeable and great sense of humour. Couldn't have asked for better guides.

nico our tour guide was great very knowledgeable gave us plenty clear information about the trip & much more about the history of surrounding areas Enzo the driver did an amazing job considering how narrow the roads are on the trip. Geovani our tour guide at Pompeii was also amazing very knowledgeable and very passionate about the old city he looked after us made sure we stuck together i definitely reccomend having a guide for Pompeii you would miss so much otherwise. The Pizza at lunch halfway up versuvious was also excellent great break after a busy morning then an extra treat was the Lemon Farmer his stories & the chance to sample various home made verities of lemonchello. Before a hike up Versuvius the views from the top are breathtaking what a great trip would highly recommend

We were in great hands with Melania, Enzo and Genaro as our Pompeii guide. All were warm, professional, fun and made this day an unforgettable experience. Everything ran smoothly and we could enjoy a mind blowing Pompeii visit and hike on the breathtaking Mount Vesuvius after a delightful lunch and surprise limoncello tasting!!

From Sorrento without the Circumvesuviana

Pompeii is reachable from Sorrento by train, but the volcano is not, and doing both in a day on public transport means the train, a bus to the crater with its own timetable, tickets booked online for two separate sites and lunch wherever you find it. Here the meeting point is in the centre of Sorrento, by the Achille Lauro car park, and the minibus does the rest, with a tour leader who keeps the day on time.

Vesuvius first

The minibus climbs to about 1,000 metres, where the road ends, and the last stretch to the rim of the crater is on foot, on gravel, at your own pace. The alpine guide explains the volcano and its eruptions, and on a clear day the view from the top takes in the whole Gulf of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula and Capri. The park ticket is included.

Lunch on the slopes

Between the two sites you stop at a pizzeria on the slopes of Vesuvius for a margherita or a marinara and a soft drink, included in the price. It is a proper break before the walking in Pompeii.

Pompeii with a licensed guide

You skip the ticket line and go in with the guide, who chooses the route through the city buried in 79 AD: the Forum, where the town met to do politics and business; the Stabian Baths; the streets with their wheel ruts and stepping stones; houses with frescoes and mosaics, bakeries and bars. Pompeii is big, and two hours with someone who knows where to go show more than a day on your own. Then the minibus takes you back to the meeting point in Sorrento.

What to bring and what to know

Closed, comfortable shoes: gravel on the crater path, uneven stone in Pompeii. Water and a hat in summer, a windproof jacket for the crater in winter and spring; unlike most of our tours, this one runs all year. Children aged 3 to 17 pay € 85, infants up to 2 travel free. For the site alone, without the volcano, there is the two-hour guided visit of Pompeii, from € 49.50; the same day from Naples is the Pompeii and Vesuvius tour from Naples. Everything is on the Pompeii and Vesuvius tours page, and other days out from the peninsula are on excursions from Sorrento.
