Two hours is enough, if someone chooses for you

Pompeii covers 66 hectares and most visitors leave having walked a long way and seen little. In two hours a licensed guide takes you to what matters and explains it: the Forum, where the city did its politics and its business; the Stabian Baths, the oldest in town; the Lupanare, the brothel with its frescoes; a thermopolium, the counter where Pompeians bought hot food to eat standing up. Along the way, houses with their frescoes and mosaics, the workshops, the wheel ruts in the stone streets. The headset means you can stop to take a photo without losing the thread.

Skip the line

The tickets are bought for you, so you go straight in with the guide instead of queuing at the office, which in summer matters. After the two hours you can stay inside the site as long as you like with the same ticket: the guide suggests what to see next, the Villa of the Mysteries or the amphitheatre for instance, and you continue on your own.

Meeting point, times and price

The meeting point is the ticket office in piazza Esedra, next to the Hotel Vittoria, at the Porta Marina entrance; it is a short walk from the Pompei Scavi station of the Circumvesuviana, the train from Naples and Sorrento. Tours in English at 10:30 and in Spanish at 11:15. Adults € 49.50, children aged 3 to 17 € 24, infants up to 2 free; the entrance ticket, the licensed guide, the headset and the helpdesk are included. Wear comfortable shoes, the streets are uneven stone, and bring water and a hat in summer.
