Morning: the crater of Mount Vesuvius

From Naples the minibus climbs the slopes of Vesuvius into the Vesuvius National Park, to the start of the crater path. The last stretch is on foot, at your own pace. At the rim an alpine guide explains how the volcano works and how it has erupted over the centuries; on a clear day you see the whole Gulf of Naples below you.

Lunch on the way

Lunch is included: a pizza, margherita or marinara, with a soft drink. It is a proper break between the volcano and the ruins.

Afternoon: Pompeii with a licensed guide

Pompeii was buried by the eruption of AD 79 and rediscovered almost intact. With skip-the-line entry you go straight in with a licensed guide, who takes you through the streets of the Roman city: the baths, the bakeries, the theatres, the houses with their frescoes and mosaics. Having a guide here makes a real difference, because the site is huge and without one it is easy to walk past the most interesting details.

Good to know before you book

The tour is in English. Wear comfortable shoes: the crater path is gravel and the streets of Pompeii are uneven stone. In summer bring water and a hat, as there is little shade at either site. At the end of the day the minibus brings you back to the Starhotels Terminus.
