Capri from the sea, in an hour
Half of Capri is invisible from the Piazzetta: the cliffs, the grottos, the rock arches and the villas built on the rocks are only seen from a boat. This is the quickest and cheapest way to do it, one hour that fits between the ferry and the funicular without changing your plans for the day. It works as the first thing after landing, to get your bearings, or as the last thing before the ferry back.
The route
From the port the boat heads east, under the Salto di Tiberio and past the White Grotto, then the Natural Arch, the window of rock high above the coast. You reach the Faraglioni, the three rocks that stand for the island, and when the sea allows the boat passes through the Arch of Love, the hole in the middle rock. Along the bay of Marina Piccola and the headland of Villa Malaparte, the red house on the cliff, to the south side, where the boat enters the Green Grotto, named after the colour of its water, and the Marvellous Grotto, and reaches the lighthouse at Punta Carena on the western tip. On the north side you return to Marina Grande under Villa San Michele.
The Blue Grotto
Not on this trip: the waiting time at the entrance does not fit into an hour on the water. The boat passes the mouth of the cave. If the Blue Grotto is your priority, take the version of the trip with a stop at the Blue Grotto, where the cave ticket is paid on the spot; our Blue Grotto guide explains times, prices and when it is worth going.
Times, meeting point and ticket
