Rome to Capri in a day: how it works

Capri is further from Rome than it looks on the map: a train, a transfer and a boat, with timetables that have to fit. On this tour the three legs are already joined. You only need to be at Roma Termini at the time printed on your ticket. If you would rather do it yourself, our guide on how to get to Capri from Rome lists trains, hydrofoils and travel times.

Termini, Napoli Centrale, the port

The high-speed train reaches Naples in a little over an hour. At Napoli Centrale our driver takes you to the port, and the crossing to Capri starts with Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples behind you. The crew speaks English, Italian and Spanish and gives you a map of the island.

Guided tour of Capri and Anacapri

At Marina Grande your licensed guide is waiting. The island is small but steep, so a minibus reserved for the group takes you between Marina Grande, Anacapri and Capri instead of the public bus queue.

Anacapri

Anacapri is the upper, quieter town: whitewashed lanes, small squares, the view over the Gulf. From here the chairlift climbs to Monte Solaro, the highest point of Capri; the ride is optional and the ticket is not included, and your guide tells you how much time you have.

Capri, the Piazzetta and the Gardens of Augustus

Down in Capri the walk takes in the Piazzetta, piazza Umberto I, and the Gardens of Augustus, the terraces above the Faraglioni and the hairpin bends of via Krupp. Along the way you taste limoncello, made here from the lemons of the coast, and pass the workshops that still make the island's sandals and perfumes.

Free time, and an optional cruise around the island

In the afternoon you have free time for lunch, shops or a coffee in the Piazzetta. If you want to see Capri from the water as well, add the boat trip around the island for € 24 per person: the Marvellous, White and Green grottos, the Natural Arch, Villa Malaparte and the Faraglioni. The Blue Grotto is not part of this tour because of the waiting time at the entrance; our Blue Grotto guide explains how to visit it on another day.

Back to Rome

At the end of the day you take the boat back to the mainland, the driver returns you to Napoli Centrale and the high-speed train brings you to Roma Termini in the evening.

Price and what to bring
