The Amalfi Coast from Portici and Torre del Greco

From the towns under Vesuvius the Amalfi Coast is a long drive through Castellammare and over the hills, or a train to Sorrento and a ferry. This boat tour starts at home: tell us where you are staying and we send you the nearest meeting point; the transfer takes you to the port, the Granatello marina in Portici or the Muraglione pier in Torre del Greco, and the day is on the water from there.

The cruise

Leaving the Vesuvius coast the boat crosses the Gulf towards Sorrento, so the first hour is open water with the volcano shrinking behind you. Then the peninsula: Sorrento on its cliff, the Baths of Queen Giovanna, the Bay of Ieranto and Punta Campanella, where you turn the corner into the Gulf of Salerno with Capri on your right. The Amalfi Coast starts with the Li Galli islands and continues past Nerano, Praiano and the Fjord of Furore. The tour leader names each place as it comes and tells you when to be back on board at the stops.

Amalfi

Amalfi comes first. It was a maritime republic in the Middle Ages and the cathedral of Saint Andrew, at the top of a long staircase on the main square, is what remains of that wealth. The main street behind it sells the handmade paper the town is known for, ceramics and lemon sweets. Lunch is not included: with two stops in the day, pick one town to eat in and keep the other for walking.

Positano

Positano is the last stop, and you arrive the way the town is meant to be seen, from the water, with the houses stacked up the hillside above the Spiaggia Grande. Ashore there are the lanes of boutiques and pottery shops and the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica dome. In the late afternoon the boat crosses back to the Vesuvius coast and the transfer returns you to the meeting point.

Prices and practical notes

Adults € 84 in April, May and October, € 89 in June and September, € 99 in July and August; children aged 3 to 6 pay € 10 less, infants up to 2 travel free. The price covers the transfer, the cruise, the tour leader and the free time; lunch and entrance tickets are extra. Amalfi and Positano are towns of staircases, so shoes matter more than usual, and in summer a hat, water and sun cream. The itinerary can change with the sea. Before you go, have a look at our Amalfi Coast map and Positano map.
