Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast by boat

By road, Sorrento to Amalfi means the coast road, with its buses and summer queues. By boat you cover the same distance looking at the coast from below, and you arrive in the two villages the way they were built to be seen: from the sea. After booking you receive the details of your meeting point in Sorrento or the surrounding towns.

Sorrento from the sea, Punta Campanella, Li Galli

Leaving the port you see Sorrento from the water, the hotels lined up on the tuff cliff. Then the coast gets wilder: the Baths of Queen Giovanna, the Bay of Ieranto and Punta Campanella, with Capri straight ahead. Round the cape you are in the Gulf of Salerno: Li Galli, the islands of the Sirens, then Nerano, Praiano and the Fjord of Furore. The tour leader tells you what you are looking at.

Three and a half hours in Amalfi

Amalfi is the long stop, and the one where most people have lunch, which is not included. The town fills a narrow valley that climbs from the harbour: piazza Duomo with the steps of the Cathedral of Saint Andrew and the Cloister of Paradise at the bottom, the main street of shops above it, and the Paper Museum in an old mill where the valley closes. There is a beach next to the harbour, and the neighbouring village of Atrani is a fifteen-minute walk away.

One hour in Positano

Positano is shorter, so choose before you land: either the climb through the boutiques and ceramics shops to the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica dome, or the Spiaggia Grande with the town stacked above you. Either way, the best view of Positano is from the boat as you arrive and leave. Our Positano map helps you decide.

Back to Sorrento

In the afternoon you sail back along the same coast in a different light, and at the port the transfer takes you back to your meeting point.

Prices and tips

Both villages are built on steps, so wear comfortable shoes, and bring a hat and sun cream in summer. Entrance tickets are paid on the spot and the route can change with the sea.
